Wrinkle Reducing Dermal Fillers FAQ

What you’ve read is true – dermal fillers can smooth lines and wrinkles to reverse the signs of aging without surgery. However, at the risk of sounding like your mom, it’s important to have a complete understanding of what dermal fillers are as well as the associated risks before letting anyone near your face with a needle. As with all cosmetic procedures, it’s also critical to have total confidence in your chosen professional (hopefully that’s us!). Before scheduling your consultation read through the answers to our most frequently asked questions about dermal fillers.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable gels made from hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring substance in the body that hydrates the skin and acts as a plumping agent. When injected into wrinkles, folds, and other depressions, hyaluronic acid provides instant lift and volume while promoting long-term cell growth and renewal. The result is smoother, younger-looking skin.

Do dermal fillers last forever?

No, but the results are long-lasting. At Prime Med Spa, we use the Juvéderm line of dermal fillers, which have a lifespan of one to two years, depending on the formula used. In touch-up treatments, less of the product is typically required to achieve the same results.

Where can dermal fillers be used?

Dermal fillers can be used to smooth lines, wrinkles, and folds in the face, as well as to add volume to the hands and lips. The most commonly treated areas include:

  • Nasolabial folds (lines between the nose and corners of the mouth)
  • Marionette lines (from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
  • Lips (enhance the shape and fullness and/or improve symmetry)
  • Cheeks (address mid-facial volume loss for a younger look)

Why choose dermal fillers over a facelift?

Each product in the Juvéderm collection of dermal fillers is designed to address a different area of the face. When used together, dermal fillers can effectively erase the signs of aging without affecting your natural facial expressions. And, because dermal fillers aren’t permanent, you can control your look subtly as you age.

What is the dermal filler treatment like?

At your first appointment, we’ll take your medical history and provide a facial analysis. At this time, you’ll be asked to describe your areas of concern, whether it’s parentheses lines, thinning lips, or volume loss in the cheek area. Then, we’ll clean your skin with an alcohol swab before administering the injections.

Do dermal fillers hurt?

Everyone’s pain threshold is different, but most patients describe the injections as a tiny pinch. If you’re particularly sensitive to pain, you can ask us to apply a topical numbing gel to the treatment area before we begin the injections.

Are there any risks with dermal fillers?

Side effects are rare, but may include redness, tenderness, swelling, itching, or bruising at the injection sites. Most patients find the side effects to be manageable, and they typically clear up on their own within a week.
