Everything You Need to Know About Labiaplasty

If you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, even in the most intimate of areas, Prime Plastic Surgery offers options that boost your comfort and confidence. Women bothered by the look or feel of their external genitalia may opt for a labiaplasty.

This procedure reduces the size and/or changes the shape of the labia. Interest in the procedure has been increasing as women take charge of their bodies and wellness.

The labia is the external tissue outside of your vagina. The labia majora describes the outer, hair-bearing lips. The labia minora are tucked inside. Women usually opt for labiaplasty to address the labia minora, but it is possible to opt for change to the labia majora.

Board-certified plastic surgeon James J. Chao, MD, FACS of Prime Plastic Surgery in San Diego, California, wants you to be informed about labiaplasty as a solution when you feel self-conscious about or uncomfortable with your labia.

If you’re considering joining the more than 11,000 women who underwent the procedure in 2019, here’s what you need to know.

When should I consider a labiaplasty?

Your labia is unique to your body. It may be long, asymmetrical, or have multiple folds. But, your labia can also make you feel uncomfortable. The size and shape of your labia is determined by genetics – some women are just born with a larger labia.

A long labia can cause discomfort during exercise, like when riding a bike, or make it hard to fit discreetly into a bathing suit. Your labia may get in the way during sexual intercourse and cause discomfort or pain. The extra tissue gets tucked into your vagina, and you may experience too much friction.

You may also just dislike the way your labia looks. Dr. Chao makes sure you understand that there isn’t a “standard” way your labia should look. Much like ear lobes, labia come in all lengths, shapes, and sizes. When opting for surgery, you should be certain that you’re doing it for you and that you’ll be happy with the outcome.

Women may also notice that any changes to the way their labia looks and feels have occurred following childbirth or as they age. Hormonal changes can cause changes in its size as you age.

How will a labiaplasty change my sex life?

A change to your labia may make you feel more self-confident and free in the bedroom. If your labia caused you pain during intercourse, labiaplasty can make intercourse pleasurable. The surgery has no affect on your ability to orgasm.

What is involved in a labiaplasty?

Your labiaplasty procedure is personalized to you. Labia sizes and shapes vary greatly among women and your concerns are unique. You’ll discuss your goals for labiaplasty with Dr. Chao so that he can determine whether you need trimming of the labia minora or majora. You may want both sides of your labia trimmed or, if your labia is asymmetrical, just one side.

Recovery takes about one week, but you will need to refrain from sexual intercourse and exercise for four to six weeks following the surgery.
