About gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can occur at any age, resulting from changes in your hormones, genetics, obesity, or the use of certain drugs.

An imbalance of testosterone and estrogen levels may cause gynecomastia. As a man ages, his levels of testosterone decrease, which could cause gynecomastia to become prominent.

Adolescents sometimes develop gynecomastia as their hormones change during puberty. Extra high levels of testosterone brought on by steroid use can also cause gynecomastia.

When you have gynecomastia, your breasts look more like a woman’s breasts rather than the rounded, body-builder sculpted chest that makes you proud to go shirtless.

Why consider surgery

If your gynecomastia makes you self-conscious and changes your behavior, consider corrective surgery. Behavior changes include avoiding certain activities, such as swimming or lounging by the pool, or avoiding intimacy because you’re self-conscious about the way you look.

If you feel that your chest just doesn’t reflect your commitment to workouts and makes you look flabby, rather than fit, surgery may also be an answer.

About gynecomastia surgery

Surgery for gynecomastia reduces the size of a man’s breast. Dr. Chao may use liposuction, excision, or a combination of the two techniques to help you achieve a flatter chest with enhanced contours.

With liposuction, Dr. Chao places small, inconspicuous incisions and inserts cannulas, or small tubes, in the areas to be reduced. He applies laser energy to the area to liquify and melt the unwanted chest fat. The heat energy also tightens the skin with a variety of wavelengths, as extra fat is vacuumed out through the cannulas.

If you have gynecomastia characterized by glandular breast tissue or excess skin, Dr. Chao may recommend excision surgery. During this procedure, he can also reduce the size of the areola – if necessary – and reposition your nipples to create a more natural-looking male contour.

In some cases, the two techniques are combined to get you the best results.

The best candidates

If after a thorough medical history review with Dr. Chao, it’s determined that your gynecomastia can’t be corrected with another medical treatment, you may settle on surgery as a solution. You should be a nonsmoker, as smoking inhibits healing from the procedure.

You should also be of a normal weight and old enough that your breast development has stabilized. Adolescents can sometimes benefit from surgery, but should be aware that they may need future interventions if their breast development continues.

If you’re a man bothered by the look of a disproportionately large chest, consider surgery.
